The S6 Avant I was looking to buy didn't work out, so I've moved on to a W8 4Motion Passat Wagon. I love my current Passat and the 3.6L engine, but have ZERO insight into the W8 re: reliability/issues/driving feel.

Someone must have some thoughts, and as always - the insight is much appreciated!

This unfortunately is a very very delicate engine. If it isn't running perfectly optimal, things will break down, and those things will break others. It is an unreliable power train, but one that sound and feels amazing. I want a Passat W8 VERY badly, but know I will only get it when I have enough money to keep it going and have others cars as well.

It sounds amazing, I followed one that either had an aftermarket muffler or exhaust system and the sound was legitimately exotic.

Like most things German, it's brilliant until it starts breaking (which it will).

I've heard, but have no first hand experience, that this engine can be heinous to work on as well as unreliable. Because it isn't an easy engine to work on it will be very expensive to fix and more than likely require a dealer or specialist to do any work on it. Sounds like it would be an awesome ride when working properly but you might get more reliability out of an MG.

If you can find a clean, good condition car they're great. But if you don't take care of it, it won't take care of you.

The horror!

It's a beautiful engine, but staggeringly delicate, and extremely expensive to maintain. You'll also have issues finding people even willing to work on it. Most VW service centers don't even have techs trained/certified on them any more, and I would not trust a non-VAG tech with this thing.
